Methodology: How We Collect and Verify Dental Implant Prices

Most dental cost pages publish a range with no source. This page explains exactly where our numbers come from, how they are calculated, and what they cannot tell you.

If you only read one section, read confidence grades — it tells you how much weight to put on any number on this site.

What we measure

We report the total patient-paid price before insurance for a defined treatment, in a defined geography, at a defined time. "Total" means the procedure is finished and the patient has a functioning restoration.

Term Definition
Low 10th percentile of collected quotes
Typical Median (50th percentile) of collected quotes
High 90th percentile of collected quotes
All-in Includes implant body, abutment, and crown; excludes grafting unless stated
Quote date The date we collected the price, not the date the clinic last updated its website

We round to the nearest $50. We do not adjust for inflation between collection dates; instead we show the collection window and update quarterly.

Where the data comes from

Source What we take Why it is included Confidence
State Medicaid fee schedules Maximum reimbursable amount by CDT code Public, verifiable, comparable across states A
Clinic published price lists Listed price for a named treatment Direct from the provider B
Phone quotes Price for a standardized case script Captures real street prices C
National chain pricing Published or quoted price at Aspen, ClearChoice, Affordable Dentures Anchors the low and high ends B
CMS / FAIR Health benchmarks Regional price index Calibration only; never used alone B
Reader-submitted bills De-identified final invoice Catches what quotes miss D

What we never do: estimate from another cost website, average other sites' ranges, or generate a number with an AI model. If we cannot source it, we do not publish it.

Confidence grades

Grade Meaning How it is used
A Government fee schedule, published and dated Baseline; always cited
B Provider-published price or national chain price Counted directly in percentiles
C Phone quote using our standard script Counted directly; date and clinic type recorded
D Reader-submitted invoice Used as a sanity check; not counted in percentiles unless 5 or more submissions exist for that market

A page with fewer than 20 grade B/C quotes is marked "limited sample" and does not get a "typical" figure.

How we collect a quote

Every phone quote uses the same script so prices are comparable:

"I'm missing one lower molar. I have adequate bone as far as I know. I need the implant, the abutment, and a crown. Can you give me the total price if everything is done in your office, and tell me what would be extra — grafting, CBCT, sedation, and the crown?"

We record: clinic name, city, provider type (general dentist / oral surgeon / periodontist), date, total, itemized inclusions, and whether the quote was written or verbal.

Excluded from the sample: quotes that bundle whitening, orthodontics, or unrelated treatment; quotes without a price; quotes older than 12 months.

Sample sizes and limitations

Limitations you should know:

  1. Prices are cash-pay and pre-insurance. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on your plan.
  2. We quote a standard case. Complex cases cost more.
  3. A clinic's website price may be stale; we record the collection date.
  4. We do not have access to insurer allowed amounts for every plan.

Update schedule and changelog

We refresh Medicaid schedules annually and clinic quotes quarterly. Each page shows the date of its last collection, not the date the page was edited.

Date Change
2026-10-20 Initial collection: Initial collection: 22 California clinics
2026-11-08 Added 5 San Diego quotes; Medi-Cal schedule updated
2026-11-08 No further changes.

If a price moves by more than 10% between updates, we note it in the changelog and on the affected page.

Corrections policy

If a clinic tells us a price is wrong, or a reader sends a bill that contradicts our range, we:

  1. Re-contact the clinic or verify the document.
  2. Update the page within 5 business days if the correction is confirmed.
  3. Add the change to the changelog.

Report an error: contact page.

Reviewers

Clinical review: Dr. Li Wei, BDS, Attending Dentist — checks that procedure descriptions, inclusion criteria, and risk language are clinically accurate.

What this methodology cannot do

Use these ranges to ask better questions, not to negotiate a diagnosis.
